Theodore Gericault’s “Portraits of the Insane” contrasted stereotypes of those considered mad.  He accomplished this by painting portraits of those who suffered from mental disorders with calm expressions, challenging the notion that mental illness is something which can be seen or that those suffering from them are crazed mad men.
